As the thousands of Ironman athletes, family, supporters, and staff join us on Hawai’i Island in the coming weeks, we respectfully ask that you support the efforts to promote the use of coral-safe sunscreens! In response, numerous state and local agencies have been working tirelessly to promote the recovery our corals. Last year, Hawai’i’s corals were devastated by a massive and unprecedented coral bleaching event, which resulted in the loss of 50% of our corals. Shop certified benzene-free sunscreens ahead. As the Ironman rapidly approaches, it is imperative to draw your attention to emerging research on the lethal effects of a common sunscreen ingredient, oxybenzone (benzophenone-3 BP-3), on our treasured coral reef ecosystems. We are committed to making high-quality, safe and effective sunscreens available to consumers." Every ingredient we use in our products is carefully selected to ensure safety and performance in line with our rigorous 5-step safety assurance process. Benzene is not an ingredient in any of our personal care products and we are reviewing the findings presented in this petition. However, Gerson recommends avoiding spray sunscreens out of concern about inhaling the ingredients.įor their part, a Neutrogena representative says: "Nothing is more important than the health and safety of the people who use our products. Based on that, it's safe to select a sunscreen from the list of options that Valisure didn't detect any benzene in, among them the below SPFs from Neutrogena, Aveeno, La Roche-Posay, CVS Health, and Banana Boat. The silver lining(-ish)? The lab highlights that the presence of benzene appears to be from manufacturing contamination, unrelated to the specific sunscreen ingredients used. Given that and Valisure's discoveries, both Gerson and Rogers are in favor of the FDA recalling the affected products. Intensifying her concern is the FDA's 2020 finding that six sunscreen ingredients - avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and octinoxate - were absorbed through the skin and into the body, resulting in measurable blood levels. It has been shown to be linked to blood cancers even when its levels in products were in trace levels of parts per million," board-certified dermatologist Emily P. "Benzene is a well-studied and well-known carcinogen in humans. And while the CDC notes that benzene is " widely distributed in the environment," that's not exactly cause for comfort. She adds that benzene is associated with the development of blood cancers like leukemia, as well as cancers of the lungs, GI tract, liver, ovaries and breasts, so if you spot your sunscreen on the lists of affected products, stop using it. Meanwhile, the FDA sets a recommended limit of 2 ppm per day - but according to board-certified dermatologist Heather Rogers, any exposure to benzene is worse than none, and there is an accumulative effect of being exposed to benzene, meaning multiple exposures leads to more DNA damage. 1 parts per million (ppm), which makes Valisure's findings of 2 ppm or higher in some sunscreens, from Neutrogena, Sun Bum, and CVS Health, concerning. The NIOSH sets benzene's recommended occupational exposure limit at. It found that 78 of the samples tested contained benzene, a substance that the CDC, World Health Organization, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) defines as a carcinogen via inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and skin and/or eye contact. Valisure, a pharmacy that batch tests medication before it reaches consumers, tested 294 different batches of sun care products from 69 different companies (find the full results here, on page 12). But as a report from independent laboratory Valisure revealed last week, 27 percent of the sunscreen and after-sun products it tested contained benzene, a carcinogen - and unsettlingly, many of them are household names. Heading into the summer months, it's more important than ever to have a sunscreen on hand that you trust.

What equipment do you need for adaptive yoga?Ī number of adaptive yoga and accessible yoga classes use chairs, as sitting can be an accessible way to approach various postures. In addition to offering the same benefits as traditional yoga, adaptive yoga has been shown to benefit overall well-being, daily function, balance, and more. While they appreciated the option to do yoga at home during the height of the pandemic, they’re glad that in-person classes have resumed, as they missed the camaraderie. They love how the bilateral stretching offered in yoga helps loosen their muscles, which tend to be tight and spastic due to CP. Melissa Crisp-Cooper and Owen Cooper, both of whom have cerebral palsy (CP), have been taking adaptive yoga classes for well over a decade. Can bolster a sense of community and support. One study found that participating in adapted yoga improved walking speed and balance among people with brain injuries ( 5). One study found that adapted yoga classes may improve balance ability among those living with brain injuries ( 4). One small, 6-week study found that yoga may improve the psychological effects of spinal cord injuries, including self-compassion ( 3). Many disabilities present as physical impairments, but their mental effects can weigh the heaviest. One study found that in addition to improved physical mobility among patients with Parkinson’s disease, adaptive yoga led to a reduction in depressive and anxiety symptoms ( 2). May be a safe and effective treatment option for those with Parkinson’s disease.A 2017 study among a broad range of individuals and abilities found significant improvements in their quality of life, as measured by their mental and social well-being ( 1). SummaryĪdaptive yoga truly is for all bodies and abilities.īesides the overarching benefits of yoga that everyone reaps when practicing, there are a few key benefits that are especially relevant to those with injuries, chronic conditions, physical disabilities, or age-related challenges. In a number of the in-person adaptive yoga settings, teachers may have multiple assistants who offer physical assistance, including using their own bodies as teaching tools to help people feel the alignment of a pose. She began teaching adaptive yoga in 1996 at the Cerebral Palsy Center, now known as Ability Now Bay Area, and still teaches there today. Lyons’ classes are described as being for people with disabilities and chronic conditions. There are also class offerings that are exclusively for people who have partial or total paralysis or other disabilities that may affect their ability to walk or stand, such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy. In addition to general adaptive yoga classes for all bodies and abilities, many teachers like Sanford offer specialized classes, such as “Yoga for Ambulatory Individuals,” which are classes for people who can walk but live with impaired mobility or balance issues. If you have a specific injury, condition, or ability level that requires some degree of modification in a traditional yoga class, you might want to give adaptive yoga a try. Multiple variations are generally offered, allowing the poses to be adapted to people’s unique needs.Īdaptive yoga is an umbrella term that can include yoga for specific conditions like multiple sclerosis, yoga for people with physical disabilities, or even yoga for older adults. The senior teacher explains, “All yoga practices are personal, and every body is different.” However, she finds the title to be a helpful distinction for people of all abilities to know there’s a class style that suits them.īased in the Bay Area, Lyons observes that many people may think that they can’t do yoga due to abilities, their age, or bodily changes. JoAnn Lyons, who has been teaching this style of yoga for 25 years, feels that all classes should really be taught as adaptive, as each of us should adapt the poses to fit our individual needs. The Java Language Specification is the set of rules that ensures that all the innovations follow the same logic and are created in accordance with Java ideology. And yet, at the time of its conception it was much more organized than its competitors. These days, Java syntax is not the easiest anymore… at least for now, as there are many new features in the works that make the code easier to read and write. This approach allows running the same code on completely different platforms with a little to none rewriting! That’s right, you can write the program once, then execute it anywhere, if you follow the guidelines. The JVM in turn uses a dynamic compiler that compiles code during the execution of the app. Java compiler works differently, it creates the special “java bytecode”, that can be executed by Java Virtual Machine running on any system. Usually most of the programming languages compile their code into machine code, that is different for any platform. This is made possible by utilizing the most important feature of Java 一 JVM, Java Virtual Machine, runtime used for executing applications. The modern replacement for physical backups is cloud storage. If the physical backup device is damaged in the initial data disaster, your data is still lost. This is potentially the oldest method, as tape backups have been around since essentially the beginning of digital data, but because of its antiquity, it also has a significant drawback. Physical backups are good in that there’s no guessing about where the information is or how to access it. These are physical devices that serve essentially as another computer in the event of a failure with the primary system. Physical backups consist of things like CDs, flash drives, and external hard drives. Here are some of the best and most common methods. There are many ways to handle a data backup and restore what you lost. The Best Data Backup and Recovery Methods In addition to full data backups, organizations typically schedule a series of differential or incremental data backup jobs that back up only the data that has changed since the last full backup took place. The process is governed by predefined policies that specify how frequently the data is backed up and how many replicas (duplicate copies) are required, as well as by service level agreements ( SLAs) that dictate how quickly data must be restored. So what data should be backed up and how frequently? A backup process is applied to critical databases or applications. Notably, backups are usually an organization's best option for recovering from a ransomware attack. Backups provide a way of restoring deleted files or recovering files that are accidentally overwritten. Simply put, data backups guard against data loss. Organizations back up their critical data, capturing and synchronizing a point-in-time snapshot that is then used to return data to its previous state. Backing up data is a crucial component of any disaster recovery (DR) plan. Elderly females often have osteoporosis leading to weakening of the bone whereas young males often have very strong ligaments. The highest prevalence of fibular avulsion fractures occurs in elderly females and young adult males. Typically, the avulsed fragment of bone is small and does not enter the ankle joint as it is still attached to the ligament that pulled it off the bone. As a result, the ligaments tear or in some instances a section of the ligament may stay intake and pull off (avulse) a small piece of bone from the end of the fibula. The sudden inward rolling (inversion) of the ankle places excessive strain on the outer ankle ligaments attaching the fibula to various bones in the ankle (talus and calcaneus). The injury is essentially a moderate-severe ankle sprain except that instead of only tearing the outer (lateral) ankle ligaments a small fragment of the prominent outer ankle bone (fibula) is pulled off (avulsed) by the attached ligament. Clinical Presentationįibular avulsion fractures are usually the result of an acute inversion injury to the ankle. Although a fibular avulsion fracture is technically an “ankle fracture” the injury is essentially the equivalent of a moderate-severe ankle sprain and should not be mistaken for a more severe ankle fracture which often does require surgery. The fracture is treated by immobilizing the ankle with a boot or ankle brace with gradual reintroduction of weight bearing over a period of weeks. The diagnosis is made by x-raying the ankle. The injury produces pain, tenderness, and swelling of the ankle making weight-bearing difficult or impossible. Fibular avulsion fractures most commonly occur from an inversion of the ankle that causes the ankle ligaments to pull a small piece of bone off of the end of the fibula. 7/28/2023 0 Comments Great impression stampsIt contains different stamps on all four faces, naming two different, though presumably related, oculists – Gaius Valerius Amandus and Gaius Valerius Valentinus. They are made of soft stone and generally contain three components – the name of the medicine, a personal name (assumed to be that of the oculist) and the name of the ailment it proclaimed to treat (Jackson 1996).Ī collyrium stamp from Biggleswade (RIB II.4, 2446.2, discussed in Tomlin 2018) is a good example to explain the type. Over 300 such stamps are known from the Roman world, with 28 from Britain (Baker 2016). The museum’s interpretation tentatively identifies it as a ‘name-stamp for marking goods such as eye-ointment’, and it is indeed reminiscent of a category of object known variously as ‘oculist’s stamps’ or ‘ collyrium stamps’ – used to press information into blocks of semi-solid eye ointments (known as collyria). The stamp is located just right of centre, above and to the right of the large tile. Display at the Hull and East Riding Museum. Sadly he did not include it in any of his publications about finds from the area so its exact findspot remains unknown. The stamp was on display the last time I visited the Hull and East Riding Museum, as part of a display on literacy. It was acquired for the museum by the first curator Thomas Sheppard (an early pioneer of museum archaeology nationally), who was born in South Ferriby, and it may be one of his own finds. The Curator of Archaeology at the Hull and East Riding Museum has kindly provided some information on the provenance of the stamp. The South Ferriby stamp flipped horizontally, showing what I believe to be the nomen ‘CINCII’ He may have been a freedman who took his master’s name. The gens Cincia were an ancient Roman family, though this individual’s connections with the wider family remain unknown. Such a triple name – praenomen, nomen and cognomen – indicates a Roman citizen. The inscription is a personal name – Gaius Cincius Apollonus. The stamp is cast with a retrograde inscription, designed to be read when the stamp is pressed into something else. The museum’s online catalogue records the inscription as ‘C.CINCI APOLLONI’, but from examining the image, particularly when flipped, I believe that it actually reads ‘CINC II‘, the first ‘I’ being slightly damaged. Image copyright Hull and East Riding Museum: Hull Museums The existence of the stamp is not widely known and as far as I can tell it has never been published, but it is an unusual and intriguing object to be found in a Romano-British context. The collections of the Hull and East Riding Museum contain an unusual copper alloy stamp from South Ferriby in North Lincolnshire. |
